2019 Callaway Mack Daddy PM Grind Wedge Review

50 Words or Less

The Callaway Mack Daddy PM Grind wedge puts the tools of one of golf’s premier short game players into your hands.  A total redesign from the previous generation.  Great, soft feel.

Introduction

In 2015, Callaway released the first PM Grind wedge.  With a super high toe and grooves covering every bit of the face, it stood out in the crowd.  Four years later, the signature look is back but almost everything else has changed.  Would you expect anything else from Phil Mickelson?

Looks

At a glance, the PM Grind 19 looks like a replica of the original PM Grind wedge.  The signature features – the grooves across the entire face and the high toe – are still there.  A closer look reveals that there have been some aesthetic changes.  In addition to a higher toe, the new model has more offset.

In the bag, the Mack Daddy PM Grind still has ports near the sole to remove weight.  What’s new is a small “PM Grind” badge instead of the stamping that the previous model had.

The Callaway PM Grind 19 wedges are available in Chrome and Tour Grey finishes.

Sound & Feel

From the first strike, I loved the feel of the Mack Daddy PM Grind wedge.  These are extremely soft wedges.  In fact, the ball feels heavy on the face.

Feedback from the PM Grind wedge is above average.  Impact feels much firmer when you get away from the center, and the hit is louder, too.

Performance

The aesthetic changes – the higher toe and increased offset – weren’t just done for looks.  Each has a performance purpose.  According to Callaway, Phil requested the additional offset so that he could more effectively move the ball back in his stance to hit knockdown shots.  The higher toe increases the hitting area and raises the center of gravity (CG) to make flop shots from the rough easier.

Being that I’m not Phil, I can’t say that I noticed a huge difference in my ability to flight the ball down.  For me, the high CG feels like it has more impact on that lower, higher spin flight than the offset, but your mileage may vary.  Either way, if you like hitting low spinners, this wedge is worth a look.

For hitting flop shots, high toe wedges are certainly an advantage.  My confidence with this big club face is sky high, just like the resulting shot.  The new C-Grind is also helpful on flops because so much metal has been removed from the heel.

Conclusion

Obviously, putting these wedges into your bag won’t give you Lefty’s short game – they’d cost a lot more if that were the case.  However, the giant face did give me Mickelsonian confidence to take on bold shots around the green.  If your short game needs some added mojo, these may be the key.
