The standard version in Callaway\u2019s 2020 driver trio, the MAVRIK delivers strong, consistent performance.\u00a0 Great looking from every angle.<\/p>\n

Introduction<\/strong><\/h2>\n

As I walked onto the driving range, the MAVRIK driver headcover served as a beacon and proved that, at a minimum, the Callaway marketing hype was effective.\u00a0 I ended up being the fourth person to hit the driver and the wait was a good chance to watch ball flights and listen to the reactions from my golf friends.\u00a0 With\u00a0\u201cwhoa\u201d and \u201chot\u201d being common proclamations<\/strong>, expectations were fairly high when I was finally able to make my own swings \u2013 and I wasn\u2019t disappointed.<\/p>\n

Looks<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Although I\u2019m not a big fan of the shiny orange segment on the headcover, I do like the deep metallic orange color on the head of the MAVRIK.\u00a0 The matching pinstripe color on the trailing edge of the crown and outline of \u201cRiptide\u201d on the shaft make the club look\u00a0cohesive<\/strong>.\u00a0 Callaway also offers over 1,400 color combinations for a true custom club.<\/p>\n

Face on, the standard MAVRIK has a\u00a0tall, rounded presence<\/strong>\u00a0that to me is quintessential Callaway.\u00a0 Looking from behind,\u00a0the head is symmetrical with an aerodynamic shape<\/strong>.\u00a0 The high gloss coating on the composite crown looks stunning, but the reflectiveness can be a bit distracting depending on the sun location.\u00a0 Wonderful shaping overall.<\/p>\n

Sound & Feel<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In similar fashion to what Matt S. noted with the Sub Zero model and Dylan on the MAX, the standard MAVRIK has a very pleasing sound<\/strong>.\u00a0 Mid volume, the resultant \u201cthwack\u201d resonated between a metallic and woodsy tone with a pleasant baritone pitch.<\/p>\n

When I asked for clarity on \u201chot\u201d as noted in the intro, the golfers all reported the\u00a0face feeling springy<\/strong>\u00a0and that the ball felt like it was being shot off the face.\u00a0 For me, that feeling was exemplified hitting urethane cover balls.\u00a0 Although there wasn\u2019t much feedback on strike location,\u00a0the feel is very satisfying<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Performance<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Looking over the launch monitor data collected at Club Champion, two performance results of the MAVRIK stood out \u2013\u00a0great ball speed and consistency<\/strong>.\u00a0 Both of these can be attributed to some degree to the technologies of Flash Face SS20 and Jailbreak.\u00a0 Neither design feature is completely new, but the longevity of the concepts is a testament to their impact on performance.<\/p>\n

By connecting the crown and sole of the club behind the face,\u00a0Jailbreak<\/strong>\u00a0concentrates the impact forces on the face.\u00a0 And that face is now made from FS2S titanium, which is \u201c6 grams lighter than traditional titanium,\u201d allowing designers to redistribute weight for higher MOI. \u00a0To optimize the face design with the new face material, Callaway again utilized\u00a0artificial intelligence<\/strong>\u00a0to maximize ball speed and forgiveness. \u00a0With performance expanded across a larger surface area, the resultant\u00a0Flash Face SS20 gave me the noteworthy consistency \u2013 an attribute that can benefit most every golfer.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fitters\u2019 Take<\/h2>\n

Fitters\u2019 Take is a new feature that we will be adding to select reviews.\u00a0 A panel of Master Fitters from Club Champion\u00a0will share their thoughts based on their own experiences and what they\u2019re seeing during fittings.<\/p>\n

With regard to the Callaway MAVRIK driver, one of our fitters noted that it is low spin and that many golfers may not need the SZ model just to shave off some RPM.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cGreat forgiveness\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0was a common refrain among numerous fitters.<\/p>\n

Multiple fitters \u2013 and their clients \u2013 have commented on the\u00a0improved sound<\/strong>\u00a0compared to the Epic Flash.\u00a0 The fitters were also impressed with the shape, one stating it\u2019s the\u00a0\u201cbest looking Callaway head\u201d in some years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Finally, one fitter gave very strong, in-depth praise of Callaway\u2019s Flash Face SS20 Technology.\u00a0 He stated that each model and each loft has a unique face designed to help different types of misses.\u00a0 Because of this, he stated,\u00a0\u201cWe can literally fit any golfer who walks through the door into a MAVRIK driver.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/h2>\n

With a new color scheme, improved sound and consistent performance, the Callaway\u00a0MAVRIK is sure to find its way into many golf bags in 2020.\u00a0 While this standard version will suit the needs of the average golfer, it\u2019s important to remember that \u2018average\u2019 has a ton of nuances that aren\u2019t easily quantified.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be afraid of trying the low spinning Sub Zero or the ultra-forgiving MAX versions to see what suits your swing best.<\/p>\n

With this review completing the trilogy of MAVRIK drivers, you were probably expecting a cheesy Top Gun reference.\u00a0 But this driver deserves nothing but respect.\u00a0 That said, the best \u2013 and real \u2013 call sign I\u2019ve ever heard is FUNGUS.\u00a0 Keep it family friendly if you know or want to guess what it stands for in the comments.<\/p>\n
