Ben Hogan BHM02 Putter

The BHM02 is Hogan’s take on the fang-toothed head originally made popular by Odyssey. Groundbreaking? No, but if you sell putters, the fang-tooth is up there with the Anser and the Spider as de rigueur.

The Ben Hogan BHM02 fang-tooth does feature a distinctly Hogan twist, however. Hogan calls its putter line Precision Milled Forged. Like Mizuno’s M-Craft line, the 1025 carbon steel head is forged and then face-milled to its final shape.

Why is that important? Well, Hogan fancies it up with terms like “metallurgical recrystallization” and “defect-free nucleating grains.” That sounds impressive as hell but does it help those of us who aren’t into alchemy sink more putts? Hogan certainly thinks so. The company says the process creates consistent roll by eliminating dead or hot spots on the face. And it makes them feel softer than a three-day-old puppy.

The Ben Hogan BHM02 is multi-piece construction. The forged face connects to the forged/milled 304 stainless steel body. The multi-material construction allows designers to move the mass backward and towards the perimeter, which means higher putter MOI.

Hogan says the new BHM02 putter features a double-bend shaft and is face-balanced to favor a straight-back, straight-through stroke. The standard length is 35 inches but you can custom order it as short as 33.5 inches or as long as 36.75 inches or anywhere in between. Standard loft is two degrees and standard lie is 70 degrees but those can be customized at no extra charge.

You can also choose from four Super Stroke grips: the Flatso 1.0, MidSlim 2.0, Slim 3.0 or the Traxion Pistol GT 1.0.

Like the rest of the line, the Ben Hogan BHM02 sells for $195

Additional Finishes

The new BHM02 is multi-material and two-toned. The forged 1025C face is Hogan’s signature Black Diamond Metal finish while the 304 stainless steel body is a new Platinum Nickel finish. Apparently, Hogan likes the new Platinum Nickel so much that it’s adding the finish as an option for three other putters in the Forged Precision Milled line.

Two of the blades—the plumber’s neck BHB01 and the flow-neck BHB03—will be offered in both Diamond Black Metal and Platinum Nickel. The face-balanced BHB02 blade will still only be available in DBM. Hogan’s original mallet, the single-bend shafted and face-balanced BHM01, will also be available in either DMN or Platinum Nickel.

One more thing: all five Ben Hogan putters are available for righties only. It’s not that Hogan hates left-handers; it’s more a numbers game. White has told MyGolfSpy time and again he’d rather do one thing at a time right than try to do a bunch of things poorly. Hogan has traditionally introduced clubs for righties only and White has told us they’d add left-handed options if the demand was there.

As of right now, Hogan only offers its Edge game-improvement irons and its Equalizer wedges for lefties.

THE HACKERS PARADISE

A few months ago, some THP Forum members were able to test out a prototype putter model that would be coming soon from Ben Hogan Golf. Their feedback will be provided in the comments below, but before getting to that, here is an introduction to the Ben Hogan BHM02 putter.

At first glance, the familiar shape of the fang type of head is welcoming. The Ben Hogan BHM02 style is a double bend face balanced putter that is ideal for golfers that have less arc in their stroke. Perimeter weighting adds to an overall higher MOI (moment of inertia) that will make the putter feel extremely stable and balanced.

The Ben Hogan BHM02 features a two-tone finish of black and platinum that elevates the alignment when setting up. Crafted from 1020C carbon steel in a forging process that has multiple steps gives off the sound and feel one has come to expect from the putters from this lineup. Soft to the ear with virtually no “click” sound that seems to be more muted and dense than expected.

The company talks about their manufacturing to the level that their forging refines and tightens the grain structure to eliminate any dead areas and hot spots to create an even roll no matter the area of impact. Equally important to the brand, is the CNC milling that is designed for a uniform pattern from heel to toe. Combining the materials and the process, the Ben Hogan BHM02 putter is designed to offer a high quality option at a price point that matches much of their entire lineup of clubs.
