Never Compromise was founded in 1998 by Brad Adams. Brad’s father had previously founded a moderately successful golf company of his own called TaylorMade. Brad had already been on the ground floor of a putter startup, working with Michael Magerman to launch the original Odyssey in 1991.

Adams’ idea for Never Compromise was, as the name suggests, putters that were designed to “never compromise” on performance, quality or design. His Never Compromise ZI Delta 2 putter was in Jean Van de Velde’s bag at the Open Championship in 1999. We know how that worked out but it wasn’t the putter’s fault.

Adams sold Never Compromise to Cleveland Golf in 2003 and the company enjoyed a solid run for the next decade. Major winners Vijay Singh and David Toms gamed various models and the distinctive black-and-gray putter heads were made for TV.

Summary: Sub30 Type 50 is a two-piece oversize mallet constructed from stainless steel and aluminium, with most of the weight moved to the perimeter for high MOI and added forgiveness. A dual-material face insert of copper-infused aluminum and polymer offers soft, responsive feel.

Feel: The dual material face insert offered a soft, responsive feel on all putts. The insert height is one of the tallest in the market and that helped to minimise distance loss and maximise putts struck off the heel and toe. From 20-feet, we felt as though it was not hard to stop the ball within a few feet from the cup. 8

Performance: A well-balanced putter that sits nicely behind the ball and the three lines aid confident alignment. The ball rolled true off the face and it was very forgiving when struck off-centre. 8

Verdict: If you like soft inserts, you will undoubtedly love this putter. A solid putter from Cleveland at an affordable price although we felt looks let down the performance
